Boot Season Is Every Season

Updated: Aug 1, 2020

I don't know about where you live but let me tell you a little something about Virginia Beach... rain loves to visit here. You never know when you are going to see a flash flood warning on the news or your favorite weather app. Just last week it rained for about five days straight, often times unleashing overnight. Guess what, the next couple of days the forecast is calling for more rain.

All of this reminded me of how much I love to wear boots all year round. Pictured above is one of my favorite pairs from Express. Boots are a lot like jeans. They come in a variety of fits, a variety of styles, versatile materials, and can certainly "make" your look. I have been in public and have heard things people say like "why is he/she wearing boots in the summer time?" I'm about to tell you why.

1) Boots are functional - Do you like to go hunting, hiking, gardening, fishing or other outdoors activities that sometimes involve a little mess? Sneakers are cool but they aren't exactly designed for those types of activities and they are often very low cut. Depending on the material of the sneaker, they may not be as water resistant or injury resistant as boots can be. If you want to stay in style and still keep it high performance, you can try looks like these mid-calf flat boots from Berrylook.com or even something like these hybrid waterproof performance boots by Merrell.com for both men and women.

2) Perfect for Dresses - If you're a lady and you want some comfortable heel height for your skirts and dresses, boots are a phenomenal option! The fabulous thing about spring and summer boots is that you can still show off your legs in the short ones or booties as well as your toes if you want to do a peep-toe option. If you have a job that requires you to be on your feet for long periods of time but you are sick of flats, you can try boots with wider heels such as these embroidered booties at flamechill.com. For something a little dressier for the office or party hour, check out these Nina's Merima booties available at macys.com.

3) Blame it on the Rain - Yep, weather. You could always wear your standard rain boots every single time but if you're headed to work, you don't want to keep those on all day. As I said before, when it rains around here or in Norfolk, VA, sometimes you will be looking at high water. I remember one time I was thankful to be wearing a skirt when dropping my daughter off to childcare because I literally had to wade in water up to my mid-calf in order to get her in the door and back to my car.

In that case, some tall low-heeled or flat boots are a life-saver! I always make sure I have a couple pairs, regardless of whether it is winter. You can usually wear these over jeans, joggers, or cargo pants which makes them the wow factor if you have to cover up the rest of your outfit in a raincoat or a hoodie. Find a pair in white or your favorite color for spring/summer such as these navy Journee Collection boots from Kohl's.

4) Finally... get *ish done! Work boots are ALWAYS needed! Ever have a job working in a freezer, constantly moving heavy freight, or performing tasks like construction or hauling? Making sure you have some boots that can withstand something falling on your feet or banging your foot against something potentially dangerous is most certainly a must. Just because you have to have boots for armor, though, doesn't mean they have to be boring. Brands such as Skechers have all sorts of options for stylish work shoes such as this men's relaxed fit option or this pink industrial pair for ladies found at Moxietrades.com.

At the end of the day, make sure that you do what suits you. Just like the rule of not wearing white after Labor Day and before Memorial Day makes no sense and gets broken all the time, be comfortable breaking out of the box if you haven't already when it comes to the appropriate time to wear boots. People who have silly rules about when to wear certain things usually have no concept of style and worry too much about what other people think.

Dare you incorporate boots as a standard piece of your style no matter the season?
